Talk One
Title: Introduction to Chaos and Nonlinear Science
Abstract:
The study of linear mathematical and physical systems still contains many open problems but is otherwise quite well developed. Since the second half of the 20th Century mathematicians, physicists and engineers have been attracted to the study of nonlinear systems and made tremendous progress. This development is being continued and has constituted one of the forefronts of science of the 21st Century. Nonlinear systems have many interesting, and sometimes peculiar behaviors such as periodicity, bifurcations, pattern formations, chaos, turbulence, self-regulation, self-organization, self-assembly, etc. In this talk, the speaker will give a heuristic introduction about such nonlinear responses and behaviors to the audience. No prerequisite is required.

Talk Two
Title: Mathematical and Computational Study of Wind Energy
Abstract:
Wind energy is a principal form of renewable energy being actively developed by many nations in the world. The model of wind turbine flow is based on the Navier-Stokes equation with rotational dynamics, which is rather challenging to analyze mathematically. Thus, much of any useful study must be done via computational mechanics involving large-scale scientific computation. In this talk, the speaker will first give some overviews of wind energy development, and then present his study of some issues of interest from a mathematical perspective. In particular, he will present recent numerical results and visulization obtained by his group at Texas A&M University and Texas A&M University-Qatar computed by using the OpenFOAM software, leading to an improved understanding of wind-turbine flows and wind farm layout designs.
个人简介
Goong Chen, 男,1950年生于台湾,1972年本科毕业于台湾清华大学,1977年博士毕业于美国University of Wisconsin at Madison,导师是David Russell教授。1977-1987年先后在Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (1977–1978)、 Pennsylvania State University at University Park (1978-1987)任助理教授和副教授,自1987年至今,一直在美国Texas A&M Univerity数学系和航空学院任教,现为该校终身教授。
Goong Chen教授多年来致力于偏微分方程的控制理论与数值方法、混动动力学、量子力学等方面研究, 在理论和应用上都取得了突出成果。已出版了7本英文著作,编辑了4本英文学术著作,主编了两个学术专辑,在SIAM Review、SIAM J Control Optim等刊物上发表了130多篇学术论文。先后主持和参与了美国和卡塔尔国家研究基金项目、美国Air Force Office项目等20余项,经费达500余万美元。曾担任SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization等多个国际杂志的编委,目前是SCI期刊Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications的主编和美国Chapman & Hall/CRC出版社的应用数学类丛书的主编。
